Terry and Garry Holmes are head coaches at TG Danzport in Greenwood Village.
Tucked away in the northeast corner of the Marina Square in Greenwood Village, TG Danzport is a ballroom dance studio.
Four instructors (Gary, Terry, Hugh and Beth), certified by the Dance Vision International Dance Association, teach private and group classes in all dancing styles. Two head coaches, Gary and Terry, have been teaching ballroom dance since 1979.
The philosophy they share is to personalize the lessons to the students’ desire. Some of their students are just looking to achieve mild exercise and social interactions, while others compete nationally, or have even made ballroom dancing their career.
TG Danzport’s most accomplished dancer is Sabine Blyth (Cherry Creek High School, class of 2013), who started dancing at age 10. She competed intensely and won numerous regional, national and international awards.
“I remember watching the very first season of Dancing with the Stars, in which Charlotte Jorgensen, a beautiful professional dancer, was the epitome of grace and beauty. I wanted to be just like her,” Blyth said. “… My first lesson was with Gary, and I instantly fell in love with dancing. Even though I had zero natural talent for dance, I loved the way it challenged my mind and body to remember new things.”
Currently, Blythe trains at a studio in San Jose, Calif.
Another TG Danzport dancer is Daniel Donnelly (Cherry Creek, class of 2017). He started dancing about four years ago.
According to Terry, Daniel came to the studio one day, like a young man on a mission.
He said: “By the time I finish high school, I have three goals. I want to start my own business, I want to buy a car and I want to learn how to dance!”
Sure enough, four years later, Daniel accomplished all three.
“However, as far as dancing is concerned,” added Terry, “he did more than learn how to dance. He loves dancing!” For the first time, this year Daniel decided to compete at the Colorado Star Ball in Westminster.
Edwin Bodoni (Cherry Creek, class of 2019) and Evelyn Bodoni (class of 2020) have been dancing since they were 8 and 7, respectively.
“The minute I met my instructor, Mr. Gary, my life changed forever. It was enchanting,” Edwin said. “When he was walking, he looked like he was dancing and when he was dancing, he looked like he was flying. I was pretty sure he wasn’t touching the floor at all. I was captivated”
Today, Edwin and Evelyn are gold-level dancers proficient in waltz, tango, foxtrot, Viennese waltz, cha-cha, rumba, swing, bolero and mambo.
They compete as an amateur couple, placing first in American Rhythm and second in American Smooth at USA Dance National Championship in April.
Not all TG Danzport students compete. The majority enjoy dancing as a recreational activity or a new challenge, as a way of gaining more confidence.
