Doty cautious about ‘illegal’ voting: County clerks in charge of purging rolls
By Peter Jones
If Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler identifies Arapahoe County voters as illegal immigrants, it will be up to county Clerk and Recorder Nancy Doty to decide whether to remove those names from the voter rolls.
Last week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security agreed to allow Colorado and other states to access a federal database that Gessler says will help his office verify the citizenship of registered voters. If the event that the Secretary of State’s Office detects any noncitizen voters, Colorado statute assigns county clerks the responsibility of potentially removing them from the rolls.
Doty says she would react very cautiously if Gessler were to provide her a list of Arapahoe County residents.
