For 9-year-old Cayla Berger, a love of reading has led to a post on a national book review board, reviewing and selecting books for her peers across the United States. Cayla is a 3rd grader at Denver Jewish Day School and was recently selected to join the national PJ Our Way Design Team by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation in partnership with JEWISHcolorado. The competitive selection process included an intensive application, formal book review, and video promoting her leadership skills. This year marked the largest pool of applicants in PJ Our Way history, with 115 candidates vying for 12 spots. Cayla is the first Colorado student ever to be selected!
“This is an amazing opportunity and I’m so excited to make new friends and share my love of reading with other kids by being on the PJOW design team,” said Cayla.
Currently in its 5th year, the PJ Our Way program is the next chapter of the highly successful Jewish outreach program, PJ Library. PJ Our Way offers 9-11 year olds a choice of Jewish themed books and a safe website to upload reviews, videos and blogs.
Cayla and 11 other team members from across America have early access to books, and create content including videos and reviews. Together the team interviews authors, participates in workshops and leads the conversation amongst their peers. “We are thrilled to have Cayla Berger on our team” said Saskia Swenson Moss, who directs the Design Team. “Team members are great role models for tweens who want to connect to Judaism in fun and engaging ways.”
JEWISHcolorado also recognizes two Colorado students who were selected to serve on the Kids Advisory Committee for PJ Our Way, Ella Pomeranz, 11, of Denver and Jillian Tabak, 10, of Boulder.
